Opportunity Foundation and Study Group start project for more educational equality

In keeping with their mottos “For more educational equality” and “Professional tutoring for everyone”, the Opportunity Foundation and the study group are combining to form an effective initiative: The “Buddy Scholarship” is intended to enable more children from socioeconomically weak families to have access to qualified tutoring and to participate in good education. The project starts this month with 100 children from Hesse. The prerequisite for acceptance as a “buddy scholarship holder” is a rejection of learning-promoting measures through the Federal Government’s Education and Participation Package (BuT).

Children from low-income families are entitled to BuT benefits. This includes covering the costs of lunch at school, school trips or tutoring. A good thing. But: It is not uncommon for BuT applications to be rejected. Within the last 12 months, the study group team was confronted with around 3,500 rejections for tutoring students from financially poor families across the country. The reasons for this vary, for example: “a grade 4 is sufficient” or “the child has already been supported once”. The need for support of children from families who do not receive social benefits but earn very little is also not always recognized. For Dr. Alfons Priessner, managing member of Studienkreis GmbH, describes an unsatisfactory and depressing situation: "The families are not supported by the state, but are also unable to finance the tutoring for their children on their own. This causes disappointment, frustration and shame. We don't want to leave them alone in this situation, but rather give them a perspective."

The Opportunity Foundation and the study group have been working together since 2012 and support disadvantaged children and young people with tutoring and language learning opportunities. While Studienkreis offers lessons at reduced rates, the Chance Foundation raises donations to finance the remaining costs. As part of the “Buddy Scholarship”, Studienkreis waives half of the reduced price.

"The aim of the Opportunity Foundation is to effectively decouple the connection between origin and educational success so that every child can develop their potential for themselves and our society. We are very pleased to have Studienkreis at our side as a strong partner on this mission. In our joint project, children from less privileged families receive the same services as children with higher social status, namely professional tutoring from well-trained teachers. They are not stigmatized, but rather seen and valued in their possibilities," says Dr. Christoph Börsch, founder and board member of the Chance Foundation.

The Chance Foundation welcomes donations under the keyword “Buddy” in order to be able to include more children in the project: Frankfurter Volksbank, IBAN: DE70 5019 0000 6600 9841 85, BIC: FFVBDEFF
