Drunk cyclist flees from the police and returns later!

On May 10, 2025, the police in Landau reported a bizarre incident with an alcoholic cyclist. A 29-year-old fell on the Queichheim bridge. During the subsequent control it turned out that he had 1.51 per thousand alcohol in his blood. This result is not only worrying, but also takes into account the criminal risks for cyclists if they can be caught with alcohol at the wheel. The legal requirements state that cyclists are considered absolutely driving on a value of 1.6 per thousand and are therefore punishable according to § 316 StGB.

While the officers checked the cyclist, a 32-year-old acquaintance of the man caused further turmoil. He disturbed the police with insulting comments, which led to the initiation of criminal proceedings. In the middle of the confusion, the cyclist concerned tried to flee his bike during his friend's personal admission. The escape could initially be prevented by creating handcuffs.

escape from the police car

But while the officials took care of the 32-year-old, the cyclist actually managed to escape from the patrol car. Despite an immediately initiated search, he initially disappeared. A short time later, at 0:40 a.m., he voluntarily returned to the police station, with tied hands. There he was taken from a blood sample that confirmed the high alcohol concentration.

Away from the individual case, the fact that many cyclists underestimate the dangers of alcohol under the wheel understood. Many believe that they are less seriously endangered by bicycles than drivers, but underestimate the consequences in road traffic. The first signs of relative driving inaccuracy can be determined from 0.3 per thousand. This can lead to serious consequences, including fines and possibly a medical-psychological examination (MPU) to keep or retain the driving license.

consequences of alcohol consumption in road traffic

The legal consequences for cyclists should not be underestimated. With a blood alcohol value of 1.6 per thousand or more, the punishments are considerable. These include:

  • criminal proceedings for drunkenness in traffic
  • fine depending on the income
  • entry in the Federal Central Register
  • arrangement of an MPU
  • threat to the driver's license

As with drivers, rodly legal consequences for cyclists can have a significant impact on their future life. In the event of an accident under the influence of alcohol, civil law claims for damages and the loss of insurance coverage can also occur.

The events in Landau illustrate how serious the topic of alcohol consumption in road traffic should be taken. It is to be hoped that this incident will help to sharpen the awareness of the dangers of alcohol at the wheel, be it four or two wheels. Responsible handling of alcohol is essential for all road users.
