District library Duisburg-Homberg closed from January 25th for renovation!

The Duisburg-Homberg-Hochheide district library will be closed from January 25th to April 30, 2025. The reason for the closure is extensive renovation work that will be carried out in the coming months. The aim of these measures is to renew and modernize the entire library building.

The intended work includes the renewal of the outdated sanitary facilities as well as the modernization of the ceilings and electrical installations. The library team has the motto "Line us empty!" launched to support users and point out that the demand for media could be particularly high during this time. In order to enable this, the loan periods for media already loaned will be generously extended in early January. This is an example of how libraries want to adapt to current needs.

alternatives during the closing time

During the closing time, alternative options are available to readers. The following branches remain open for borrowing and return:

  • Rheinhausen (Handelstraße 6)
  • Ruhrort (district court road 5)
  • Rumeln-Kaldenhausen (Schulallee 11)

In addition, a media Bodervice is offered that enables the delivery and collection of media. The digital media library also remains available, so that the digital offer does not suffer during the closing time. Open fees can be paid online via the media catalog or in other branches. Further information is available on the website of the city library

opening times and contact

  • Tuesday to Friday: 10.30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 6.30 p.m.
  • Saturday: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

If you have any questions, the team in Homberg-Hochheide can be contacted by phone at 02066/34650.

The upcoming renovation work reflect an increasing discussion about the need for renovations in libraries, which are not only viewed from practices, but also from ecological aspects. In many cities, the state of library buildings is being debated intensively, since factors such as the use of "gray energy" and resource consumption are becoming increasingly important. This also combines the consideration of how existing buildings can be used or converted sustainably instead of tearing them down and rebuilding them. A comprehensive analysis of structural development shows that current and future challenges often go beyond costs and also have to take into account technological, social and ecological dimensions.

In this sense, the future reopening of the modernized library, which is planned for Tuesday, May 6, 2025, will not only offer a beautiful new space for the readership, but also a step towards sustainable use of resources and the optimization of library rooms as places of knowledge and encounter.
