A look at the crime statistics 2023

The Paderborn events are part of a larger trend. According to the police crime statistics (PKS) in 2023, the crimes recorded in Germany rose by 5.5 % to over 5.9 million cases. The violent crime, which has reached the highest level since 2007 with 214,099 cases, shows an increase of 8.6 %. However, the PKS only records end -processed crimes and thus depicts the light field of crime, while the dark field includes crimes that the police are not aware of.

Important factors for the increase are the increased mobility after the covid 19 restrictions, economic and social stress due to inflation and a high immigration rate. In addition, 34.4 % of the suspects of non -German citizens were identified. A worrying increase is also determined in suspect children and adolescents, which indicates an alarming development in crime statistics.

Overall, the current cases in Paderborn illustrate the challenges that the judicial system faces. The connection between crimes and the general social environment remains a central topic in public discussion.
