Botanical garden turns: inspire a café and plant exchange!

In the Botanical Garden in Höxter, a successful plant exchange took place, which attracted both exhibitors and numerous visitors. Andrea Schmidt and her sister Elke transformed the greenhouse into a cozy café, while many friends of the botanical garden actively helped the organization. The event started at nine o'clock and met with great enthusiasm among guests and organizers. Antje Deichmann expressed that the event was "a complete success". Happy organizers and cheerful guests were a clear sign of success.

In excellent weather, visitors were able to acquire a colorful range of high -quality plants. Throughouts were offered, among other things, perennials, houseplants, succulents and special vegetable plants. There were also many helpful tips on plant care and interesting tours on various topics. Shortly before the end of the stock exchange, it was reported that the range was sold out, which further underlined the success of the event. The next plant exchange in the botanical garden is already planned for April 26, 2025, from nine to 2 p.m.

an important initiative to biodiversity

The annual plant exchange, organized by the Freundeskreis of the Botanical Garden Erlangen e.V. (FBGE), not only promotes the exchange of plants, but also contributes to the genetic diversity. Regional plant markets play a crucial role in promoting biodiversity in private gardens. In the stock exchange, a maximum of 25 mostly private exhibitors offer their plants, including perennials, small trees, specialist literature and garden junk. Admission for visitors remains free, which makes the event particularly family -friendly.

These markets have established themselves as important platforms since their introduction in 2003 to strengthen the connection between garden lovers and nature. The proceeds from the event benefit both the FBGE and the Botanical Garden of Erlangen. The delivery of the plants is possible from 7:00 a.m., and there are short -term holding options for the deliverers.

global challenges for botanical gardens

In the further context of plant diversity, it should be noted that around 40 percent of the global plant species are considered endangered. Botanical gardens play a central role in the preservation of this biological diversity. An international study in which the botanical gardens of the University of Bonn are involved has shown that botanical institutions have increasingly suffer from restrictions on the development of their collections since the 1990s. A lack of access to new plant material from nature is a serious threat.

The study, which analyzed 1.9 million data records from 50 scientific gardens worldwide, found that new procurement has declined by 38 percent since 1993. The recommendations of the study aim to expand a global network of live collections and the improvement of the documentation to optimize the exchange of knowledge and plants.

Overall, it can be seen that local events such as the plant exchange not only offer pleasure and exchange for the participants, but also make an important contribution to the preservation of plant variety.
