Alliance 90/The Greens: For inclusion and participation of people with disabilities!

thorben Thieme, candidate for the Bundestag of Bündnis 90/Die Grünen, visited the "Lebenshilfe for people with intellectual disabilities Neuwied-Landenach e." on January 16, 2025. He was accompanied by replacement candidate Peter Buchholz and the city councilors Regine Wilke and Elisabeth Freise. The visit underlines the commitment of the Greens for an inclusive society and the promotion of integration, inclusion and participation of people with disabilities.

In the funding center, visitors were given insight into individual support that people with intellectual disabilities experience there for a self -determined life. Susanne Keller and Wolfgang Schuppert presented the pedagogical work of the center. Thorben Thieme was impressed and led an exchange about the challenges and needs of the facility. He announced that he is at the federal level to establish an “inclusion” inquiry commission, the aim of which is to develop political measures to implement the UN Convention on the Rights of Disabilities.

political measures for inclusion

thieme emphasized the importance of inclusion as a human right and its clear will to work for the unrestricted participation of people with disabilities in all areas of life. In view of the challenges with which people are confronted with disabilities, comprehensive political support is required. The Brasília Declaration and the decisions of the Prime Minister Conference are important signals for the implementation of the UN Disabled Rights Convention, such as the Bühn für Humanrechte emphasizes that physical and psychological barriers and widespread prejudices still affect the professional opportunities of people with disabilities.

necessary specialists for inclusion

A central concern to improve the situation is to extract workers in the assistance of disabled people. Specialist associations are calling for profound cooperation between the federal government, the states and civil society in order to promote inclusion. Three fields of action were named, which are important in this context: domestic personnel recruitment, a concentration on working on people (reduction in bureaucracy) and personnel acquisition from abroad. In this regard, there is agreement among the associations that the cooperation should be based on an ethical foundation of human dignity, self -determination and equal participation.

The use of programs that employers support who want to hire people with disabilities is another step to combat the shortage of skilled workers, such as the Lebenshilfe noted correctly. The attendance of Thorben Thieme and the commitment of Lebenshilfe clarify that a joint effort is required to realize an inclusive society at all levels. The human rights goal of inclusion can only be realized through politics, civil society and specialists.
