Demonstrations for democracy: Grandmas against the right set a sign!
On Saturday, February 16, 2025, around 250 participants gathered at the Hagen market square to demonstrate "right ideas" for strengthening democracy and against, as they called it. The event was organized by the movement "Grandma's against Right" and the "Alliance for Democracy and Cohesion". Among the speakers was also Ingrid Rauner, who opened the rally and emphasized that it was necessary to defend and strengthen the basic democratic values.
The deputy mayor Heinz Bühring (CDU) turned to the audience particularly urgently. He called on to vote for democratic parties on February 23. In his speech, he reminded of the beginning of the Hitler dictatorship and pointed out that citizens in Germany have to feel safe again. Bühring also named the causes of many social problems and appealed to solidarity with refugees. Ingrid Rauner joined this view and said that security could only be achieved together with them.
variety and common values
The musical support during the event came from the "Hagen Allstars", which contributed to the positive mood. Peter Krebsfänger, a contemporary witness of the Second World War, recalled in his lecture of personal experiences and pointed out that populists had to be replied with the ballot paper. A Syrian refugee, Hassan Ashraf, called for Germany to keep Germany colorful and to defend the values of society. Two students of the forest school also spoke out for an open society and the principles of democracy.
At the end of the event, Petra Wulff-Haun and Sabine Stickelmann warned of prejudice and appealed to the participants to actively compete against discrimination. The audience set the emotional final point by sang the song "Nobody chooses here on the right" and thus set a strong sign for a diverse, democratic community.
A call against right -wing extremism
Similar movements also took place in other cities. On the same day, “Grandomas against Right” also demonstrated against the AfD in the Ratinger pedestrian zone. This group symbolically erected a fire wall against right -wing extremism and continued to explain that the world burns and devastating wars. They expressed concern about the consequences of the climate crisis and the wars and pointed out that many people are threatened in their existence, which also leads to profound fears of the future in Germany. The grandmas criticized the populist promises of salvation of the AfD and its denial of reality, which is classified as democratic and inhuman. There was also a serious warning regarding the small party "The Third Way", which in the past noticed by opening bases and the spread of AfD and NPD flyers. Many of the committed grandmas have experienced post -war in Germany after the end of National Socialism and are determined to defend themselves against the emerging extremist tendencies. In different cities, they show their actions that they actively work for a peaceful and democratic future of their children and grandchildren. Her determination to build a symbolic fire wall against any form of right -wing extremism remains unbroken.
As reported by the Weser Kurier, such rallies and the voices of committed citizens set important impulses for democratic discourse in Germany. The challenges may be varied, but the cohesion of civil society is a constant answer to the threats that warn them of a fresh start.
