Digital revolution: New smartphones for the police in Wunstorf!

On April 2, 2025, Interior Minister Daniela Behrens (SPD) and Lower Saxony's police chief Axel Brockmann presented the new service cell phones for the police in the police commissioner Wunstorf. With more than 9,500 newly introduced smartphones, Lower Saxony relies on a digital transformation in police work. These modern iPhones have been tested extensively in Wunstorf in recent months, and the first use in the accident recording meets several requirements for increasing efficiency and user -friendliness.

The new devices replace the conventional handwritten forms when taking the accident with an app specially developed by the police. This allows both license plates and ID cards to be scanned quickly and easily. The aim is to significantly speed up the entire admission process for both the police officers and for the citizens. Minister Behrens emphasized during the presentation that the accident recording was only the beginning of this digital development.

functions and advantages of the new smartphones

The new smartphones offer a variety of functions that make it easier for police officers to complete bureaucratic tasks. Among other things, this includes the digital recording of accidents on site. When the devices are presented, Minister Behrens demonstrated a simulation of a traffic accident in order to illustrate the practical advantages of technology. The most important functions at a glance:

  • scanning of car indicators and ID documents
  • review of the authenticity of documents
  • admission of traffic accidents using the app
  • Access to email and calendar functions
  • Special applications for special units

Every smartphone is personally assigned to the police officers, which means a change from previously used pool devices. These devices offer more functions than their predecessors, which were mainly used for telephone communication. Digitization is intended to help accelerate processes in deployment and patrol service and to significantly improve the efficiency of police work.

Lower Saxony as pioneers of digitization

Lower Saxony is now considered a pioneer in the digitization of police work. The modernization is part of a comprehensive program that also includes the nationwide initiative "Police 2020" (P20). This program aims to standardize the IT of all German police and create a digital, networked police. However, the challenges are considerable. Future developments include, for example, an evidence cloud and the improvement of digital interfaces between the police, judiciary and citizens.

by 2030, the entire police work in Germany should receive a new IT infrastructure in order to meet technological progress and social change. Mobile end devices such as smartphones and tablets play an important role. Access to real -time information will simplify the identification of people and vehicles and make evidence more efficient. This is supported by technologies such as QR codes and the use of artificial intelligence that is used to analyze evidence.

The importance of cyber security should not be underestimated because sensitive data must be protected. It remains to be seen how the implementation of these technologies will change the everyday work of the police officers, but the first steps in Lower Saxony are promising. Digital solutions could represent a transformative force in police work so that the police can better meet the requirements of a modern society.
