Drug trade in Hochspeyer: Mann convicted of over two years in prison!

A 27-year-old man from the Hochspeyer Association was sentenced to a prison sentence of two years and three months for drug trafficking. Despite a evidence assessed as a thinner, the lay judge spoke him guilty. This case raises questions about how the judiciary in Germany deals with drug crime, especially against the background of increased drug offenses.

In 2022, the German police registered a total of 346,877 drug offenses, which corresponds to an increase of 1.8 % compared to the previous year. The clearance rate in these cases fell slightly to 90.8 %. In the same year, 266,280 suspects were recorded in connection with drug offenses.

The importance of cannabis in drug trafficking

The most common drug for drug offenses is cannabis, which makes up about two thirds of all registered cases. In 2023 alone, 207,563 drug offenses regarding cannabis were noted. The consolidations were 20.9 tons of marijuana and 3.7 tons of hashish. Most of these quantities come from Western European indoor cultivation, especially in Spain. Hashisch, on the other hand, is usually brought to Germany from Morocco via Spain and France.

A significant part of drug crime is uncovered by intensive police controls, and the authorities are increasingly relying on international cooperation to combat drug trade. In 2023, 450 cannabis plantations, including 146 large plantations and 37 professional plantations, were ensured.

increasing drug problem in Germany

The drug problem in Germany is alarming. The number of drug -related deaths rose to 2,227 in 2023, which represents an increase of 11.9 % compared to the previous year. On average, the deceased are 41 years old, with 82.8 % men being men. The increase in mixed instops, which resulted in 1,479 deaths - is also worrying - an increase of 34 % compared to 2022.

The drug market has changed, especially with regard to new synthetic drugs such as amphetamine and ecstasy. In 2023, almost 2,000 kg of amphetamine and over 1.1 million ecstasy tablets were secured. In addition, new psychoactive substances and misuse of laughing gas are increasingly appearing, which leads to serious health problems.

not to forget the also worrying increase in cocaine delics, which rose to a new high in 2023 by 27.4 %. The cocaine confessions doubled to around 43 tons. These drugs mainly get to Europe from Ecuador and Brazil.

In view of these alarming statistics, a new cannabis law will come into force on April 1, 2024, which aims to combat the black market and to promote safe regulation of cannabis sales. This could potentially reduce the trade pressure of illegal structures and relieve the judiciary.

Against this background, the condemnation of the 27-year-old can be understood as part of a major problem in German drug policy. It remains to be seen how the legal framework and public discussion about drugs will develop in the country.
