Düsseldorf receives innovative output box for passports and ID cards!

On April 26, 2025, the city of Düsseldorf opens a modern service with a new document spending box. The Düsseldorf citizens now have the opportunity to pick up their passport or identity card without an appointment. The output box is located in the service center on Willi-Becker-Allee 7. This innovative offer should make the collection of documents easier and more time-saving.

The automatic collection enables users to collect their ID cards flexibly and conveniently. An important aspect of the service is the possibility of handing over an old ID on the box, which is then safely destroyed. In order for a smooth process to be guaranteed, citizens must state when applying for the application to take place in the output box. A prerequisite is also an SMS-compatible mobile phone, since the mobile number is stored in order to obtain an SMS notification as soon as the documents are available for collection.

collection process and safety precautions

The pick -up process itself is uncomplicated and takes about 30 seconds. It takes place through triple authentication:

  • Specification of the stored cell phone number.
  • Enter the SMS pin code on the control panel.
  • inserting the old ID for destruction or entering the date of birth.

After successful authentication, the subject opens the output box and the new ID can be removed. These safety precautions ensure that only legitimate people have access to their documents. The use of this new box is motivated both by positive feedback from a pilot insert in May 2023 and by high demand before the official start.

The output box is currently available during the opening hours of the citizens' office:

Tag opening times
Monday, Tuesday 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Wednesday, Friday 7:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Thursday 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

From summer 2025, the output box will also be accessible outside of these opening hours. For this purpose, a separate room with separate access is set up, which is barrier -free and can be entered by a ramp.

A step into the future of the citizens' service

The innovative service is part of the “Bürgerservice 2.0” project, which has been promoted by the Office for Residents in Düsseldorf since 2023. Experience from the pilot use and the optimized processes should help to further increase the quality of the citizens' service and to adapt to the modern requirements of the citizens.

Against the background of digital change in administration worldwide, the city of Düsseldorf offers an important addition to the existing e-government services. E-government has established itself as an effective means of organizing civil services efficiently and contemporary. The integration of such automated systems is a step into a digitized future in which authorities and citizens can interact more flexibly.
