Düsseldorf celebrates 200 years: New sustainability gift for citizens!

On February 22, 2025, the Stadtsparkasse Düsseldorf celebrates its 200th anniversary. A sustainability foundation was launched as a gift to the citizens of Düsseldorf and Monheim am Rhein, which is equipped with a wealth of 20 million euros. This foundation aims to invest income in sustainable projects that are geared towards two central funding pillars: project funding and the creation of new co -determination formats for citizens.

Project funding will in particular support associations, educational institutions and non -profit initiatives. The funding is intended to help promote the exchange of knowledge between civil society, business and science in the areas of climate protection, renewable energies, education and sustainable development. Mayor Dr. Stephan Keller underlined the close connection of this foundation with the urban sustainability goals.

Dr.

This is not the first foundation of the Stadtsparkasse. The previous initiatives include the Eissporthalle Foundation, which was launched for its 150th anniversary for sports funding, and the art and cultural foundation, which was able to support over 400 projects with more than 3 million euros on the occasion of the 175th anniversary. For the anniversary, the first project tenders will be published today.

non -profit organizations now have the option of making funding applications for educational projects for sustainability. A total of 100,000 euros are available for 2025 to support technical solutions to reduce the CO2 footprint of such organizations with a further 150,000 euros. In addition, a model project for citizen participation is launched, which is financially supported in the first year with 50,000 euros and the following year with 100,000 euros. Dr. Stefan Dahm emphasizes the potential of the region for sustainable urban development.

The context of sustainability in 2025

The foundation of this foundation comes in a context of global challenges, such as climate change, demographic change and the energy crisis. The United Nations Agenda 2030, which was adopted in 2015, offers a global sustainability strategy that has to be adapted at national, regional and local level. The initiative shows how important the participation of different actors, from administration and politics to citizenship and civil society, is to advance sustainable development.

The common good concept complements the sustainability goals of the 2030 Agenda and calls for a value-oriented approach to a socially and ecologically sustainable economic system. Part of this movement also includes the possibility of the common good accounting that can help cities and municipalities to make their efforts visible and to improve steadily. Studies on these topics show the importance of the integration of the basics and instruments of sustainability at the local level and the opportunities that arise from this.

The Stadtsparkasse Düsseldorf With its anniversary foundation, not only offers financial support for urgently needed projects, but also actively contributes to promoting sustainable development through the exchange of knowledge and the participation of citizens.
