Erkrather Senior Council: New project for more information and commitment!

The Senior Council of the city of Erkrath took out an important step in information work for the older generation on February 22, 2025. The first info box was set up on Bergstrasse in Hochdahl, of which citizens who are 60 years and older should provide important information. Marten Wirtz, the chairman of the Senior Council, informed about the successful installation, which was realized by Wirtz himself and Timo Dietz by the building yard through volunteer help. Both sacrificed their free time to create this significant facility.

The installation included several work -intensive steps: measuring, digging for the foundation, introducing the concrete and finally attaching the showcase. It is noteworthy that Marten Wirtz donated the prefabricated concrete for the info box, which further underlines the community initiative. The Senior Council plans to regularly present information in this info box that are of interest to the older population and thus improve their quality of life.

meaning of the senior citizens' council

The Senior Council itself is a chosen municipal body of the city of Erkrath, which is to represent the interests of the citizens aged 60 and over. The Council is politically independent and denominational. It has consisted of 11 members since the last election in June 2020, who are newly elected every five years. One of the tasks of the council is to bring applications, recommendations and statements to the council and his committees. These include the committee for school, culture and sport as well as the social committee.

The volunteers bring their knowledge, orient themselves towards the needs, ideas and interests of the older population and are committed to improvements in the lifestyle of seniors. The regular public meetings enable citizens to actively participate in the matters of the older generation.

additional initiatives from Marten Wirtz

In addition to the info box, Marten Wirtz is also involved in other social projects. His project "yellow pledge bone" is particularly noteworthy. In November 2023, he noticed that Dutch deposit bottles ended up in the residual waste because they were not accepted at German return points. In order to counteract this, Wirtz set up a rolling barrel in the Rewe Stockhausen beverage market, which was sponsored by RMG and glued by Esselborn. In just six months, this initiative has already collected 380 euros in female trees.

The bin is emptied once or twice a week, and Wirtz transports the collected bottles and cans to Eerbeek to the Netherlands every few months. There are return machines that can accept up to 100 deposit bottles or cans at once. So far, Wirtz has collected over 1,200 euros that are used for important projects such as the youth work of the Catholic Youth, the Georgspadfinder in Erkrath and the Senior Council.

Overall, it can be seen that the Senior Council in Erkrath not only appears as a advisory body, but actively contributes to improving the life situation of the older population and representing their interests sustainably. The info box is a first but decisive step in this direction to make information transparent and accessible.
