Experience nature: Discover biodiversity together at the Bioblitz!

On April 17, 2025, the Lower Nature Conservation Authority of the Recklinghausen district, together with the biological station, calls on the nationwide "Bioblitz" campaign. The aim of this initiative is to record and document as many animal and plant species as possible in order to promote biodiversity in Germany. The bioblitz offers all those interested in nature the opportunity to actively participate in the recording of biodiversity.

Especially now is the season of early bloomers that bloom between January and April. This includes, for example, bush winds, sharp bocks and other types, which are characterized by their ability to use sunlight in front of the leaf roof of the trees. By participating in the organic blitz, such plants can be discovered and reported. Early bloomers often have memory organs such as onions, tubers or rhizomes that help them thrive in the cool spring days.

participation in the bioblitz

Participation in the campaign is uncomplicated. Interested parties need a smartphone with a camera and the free "Obsidentify" app. This application enables the automatic detection of plant species and proposes corresponding provisions. Alternatively, the "Observation" apps or the website www.observation.org can be used for use. Reported finds are then checked by experts and flow into scientific evaluations that benefit biodiversity and nature conservation.

In Dortmund, a bioblitz is also organized, in which the citizens are invited to observe plants, mushrooms and animals in the city. Early bloomers like winds are also in focus here. The campaign is supported by OBServation.org, the Naturmuseum Dortmund and the Biological Station Kreis Unna. This shows the general interest in nature and biodiversity in different regions.

meaning of Citizen Science

The bioblitz is part of a larger trend, known as Citizen Science, in which the population is actively involved in scientific projects. In Germany, this is an important part of many nature conservation projects that aim to observe long -term inventory developments for species and ecosystems. The collected data helps authorities to formulate recommendations for the protection and maintenance of species and to take specific measures to preserve biodiversity.

The data on biodiversity are largely collected by volunteers, which not only contributes to local research, but also provides the analysis of global questions, such as the effects of climate change. An example of such a volunteer project is "honorary nature - volunteers in parks", which supports nature observation in protected areas and is committed to ensuring that the participants are communicated their results promptly.

The actions as part of the organic flash are aimed at experienced natural observers and newcomers. Everyone can make a valuable contribution to the preservation of domestic nature by reporting finds. Questions about participation and further information please send interested parties to the lower nature conservation authority by email to biodiversitaet@kreis-re.de or to the biological station Kreis Recklinghausen e.V. at Biostation-re.de, phone: 02369 - 77505.
