The boy was sitting on his skateboard when he was hit by an approaching car that was directed by a 73-year-old driver. This obviously overlooked the boy and was unable to slow down in time. The impact caused the boy to be caught under the vehicle.
The fire brigade was able to recover the boy quickly, whereby it was accessible. He and his mother immediately received medical help before he was transported to the hospital with an ambulance. The current state of the boy's injuries is unclear, whereas the vehicle's driver suffered a shock from the incident. These investigations were taken up by the South Hesse police headquarters, as previous incidents and accident statistics
A similar incident occurred on January 18, 2022 in Marienfelde, Berlin, where a 38-year-old pedestrian was seriously injured. After a collision with a skateboard driver, who then undetected from the scene of the accident, the pedestrian succumbed to her injuries a day later. In this case, the Berlin police were also looking for witnesses. She asked for residents who could have information about skateboard drivers near Waldsassener Straße. These incidents throw a light on the continuous problem of traffic safety, especially with regard to the dangers for young road users. According to current European traffic accident statistics, thousands of people on the EU streets lose their lives or are seriously injured. Despite a significant decline in traffic fatalities in the past ten years, children and young adults have continued to endanger. 2019 there were 22,800 traffic fatalities in the EU, and in 2020 it was already 4,000 less. Nevertheless, the proportion of children under the age of 15, which was only 2 percent in 2018, remains alarming. Almost 76 percent of the traffic fatalities are men, which reflects a uniform pattern in all EU member states. While Sweden has the safest roads, with only 18 traffic fatalities per 1 million inhabitants, Romania records the highest rate at 85 racing fats per 1 million. Security on the streets is a central concern that is brought back to the fore again by the recent accidents and statistics. It is to be hoped that comprehensive measures to improve traffic safety, especially for road users in need of protection, will continue to come into focus. Information and data can be viewed via the platforms of the European Parliament, including detailed statistics on traffic safety in the EU, which on Europarl.europa.eu are shown.
