Fire brigade in the district of Borken: 4,400 heroes in use for security!
On May 4, 2025, the “International Day of Firefighters” is celebrated, an occasion to honor the indispensable work of the fire brigade. In the district of Borken, over 4,400 people are actively involved in the fire brigade, which underlines the great importance and the high priority of the voluntary work. District Administrator Dr. Kai Zwicker has already expressed his thanks to the firefighters and emphasized how important their use is for the security of the community.
In total, there are 38 fire departments in the district of Borken, which ensure that the operational readiness is guaranteed at all times. Four of these locations, in Ahaus, Bocholt, Borken and Gronau, are occupied around the clock. The active deployment department has 2,406 members, including 168 women, and the fire brigade is also supported by 221 full -time forces - including 208 men and 13 women.
statistics on fire brigade operations
A look at the missions in 2024 shows the versatility and the challenges to which the fire brigade has to face. Overall, the fire brigade in the district was alerted 4,451 times. These missions are divided into different categories:
fire inserts | 671 |
technical assistance | 2.319 |
false alarms | 942 |
other missions | 519 |
on average, that's about 12 missions a day. A remarkable assignment took place in March 2025 when a large forest area burned in Stadtlohn. Several fire brigades and organizations were mobilized to combat the flames.
The importance of volunteering
Fire work is not only of central importance in barks. According to the 5th German volunteer survey, the results of which were released on March 18, 2021, around 40 % of people in Germany volunteered in 2019. This corresponds to around 28.8 million people. The commitment rate has increased in the past two decades and shows that the 30- to 49-year-olds in particular are most common with 44.7 %.
An important result of the survey was that the difference in the participation of commitment between East and West Germany has become smaller. The fire brigade in Germany benefits from this broad commitment, which is an indispensable resource for society.
The fire brigade active in the Borken district impressively shows how important the combination of full-time and volunteering is to ensure security in the region. District fire chief Stefan van Bömmel emphasized the reliability and competence of the firefighters and thus confirmed the trust that the population has in their fire brigade.
