Mayor from Hesse demand: money for our municipalities now!

On Thursday, numerous mayors and municipal representatives from the Main-Kinzig district demonstrated and all of Hesse in Wiesbaden. The aim of this initiative is a sustainable financial relief for cities and municipalities. Those responsible are calling for the federal and state governance, the de -bureaucratization of processes and a return to the municipal self -government.

The mayor of the district, including District Administrator Thorsten Stolz, first district councilor Andreas Hofmann and district councilor Jannik Marquart, were among the participants. The board of the Main-Kinzig-Kreis's mayor's district assembly is headed by Stefan Erb (Erlensee), Monika Böttcher (Maintal), Andreas Bär (Nidderau) and Dominik Brasch (Bad Soden-Salmünster).

load limit of the municipalities

Stefan Erb made it clear that the municipalities have reached their load limit. He emphasized that they are taking on more and more tasks, but not receiving the necessary financial resources. Monika Böttcher criticized that it should not be possible to increase taxes to finance mandatory tasks, while the federal and state governments do not meet their responsibility.

Andreas Bär emphasized that the municipal costs for childcare, infrastructure and personnel costs increase faster than the allocations of the federal and state governments. Dominik Brasch pointed out the tense budget situation of the municipalities, in which over 90 percent of households consist of mandatory expenditure.

Financial framework in Hesse

The demonstration took place under the framework that Hessen had to expect less income of around 900 million euros in 2024 and 2025. Possible additional lessons can arise from the federal tax law changes. While the municipalities in Hesse are planning for 2024 and 2025 with a tax increase of 100 million euros, the municipal financial equalization (KFA) will exceed the 7 billion euro brand for the first time in 2025. For 2025, 7.13 billion euros are planned to the counties, cities and municipalities in Hesse.

In the tense economic and budget situation, the state and municipalities have to plan with lower income. Nevertheless, payments to the municipalities increase by around 200 million euros. The KFA supports the municipalities in fulfilling their tasks and compensates for the differences between poorer and richer municipalities. In addition, a further 4.6 billion euros will flow to the Hessian municipalities through various investment, funding and submission programs in 2024, and the KFA also rose continuously during the Corona crisis.

The mayor's district assembly of the Main-Kinzig-Kreis therefore continues to work for a sustainable financial policy.
