Fortnite as a pioneer: Experience democracy playfully for young people!
On January 20, 2025, innovative approaches to political education and democratic promotion will take shape in Kaiserslautern. A team of researchers from the city has set itself the goal of playfully conveying democratic values. Here you use the popular online video game Fortnite to achieve a younger target group between 14 and 24 years. In view of the increasing political radicalization in Germany, they promote the importance of democracy and sensitize participants for topics such as fascism and racism [SWR].
In this project,The use of weapons is dispensed with, which focuses on dialogue and interaction. The initiative is called "Reload Democracy" and presents itself as a festival that not only combines music and activism, but also offers a space for interactive conversations. With the support of institutions such as the Federal Center for Political Education, the festival is expected to inspire young people for democratic values and promote community feeling.
master plan for the development of the region
In parallel to the innovative education initiatives, the Verein Zukunftsregion Westpfalz is planning to create a master plan to increase the attractiveness of the region. The Kuseler District Administrator Otto Rubly (CDU) has already clearly formulated that the district councilors' demands should flow into this master plan. Various wishes and suggestions are advised in a strategy conference. The implementation of a program to carry out the master plan could start in the course of the year [SWR].But the focus is not just on the political initiatives. A recently reported accident in Kusel throws a light on the challenges in everyday life. A pedestrian was slightly injured on Saturday evening when trying to cross a street. According to the police reports, the pedestrian had priority and was taken to the hospital after the collision. This incident underlines the importance of traffic safety in the region - a concern that could also be reported as part of the planned master plan [SWR].
digital games as an education tool
The project shown uses the potential of digital games that have now developed from the image of the waste of time to a recognized pedagogical tool. According to the knowledge, the interactivity of these games is particularly effective in political education, as they promote discourse and enable the learning of democratic values. Digital games offer players the opportunity to try different ways and deal with the consequences of their decisions without describing real risks [BPB].
The connection between games and political education is a promising approach that is increasingly gaining relevance in university formation and in school context. In order to exploit the full potential of these approaches, teachers are asked to acquire comprehensive “gaming literacy” in order to adequately integrate games into educational processes and to accompany the activities of the young people sensibly [BPB].
