Fulda gets a free open-air ice rink on Aueweiher!

In Fulda, the city administration plans to build a natural ice rink on the Aueweiher. This is to be built on an area of over 1,500 square meters, which was previously used for the State Garden Show. But the current weather conditions present the project with challenges. So far, there has not been enough frost to form a continued ice surface, which describes the current state of the area: a large puddle without grass.

The costs for the ice rink amount to 80,000 euros, which are borne by the city of Fulda. However, the SPD/volt faction sees the project as failed. City building councilor Daniel Schreiner countered this criticism: He spoke in rhyme form about the need for an ice machine, which, however, should not be purchased for the time being. This triggered reactions in the region, especially from the Lauterbach carnivalists who answered with their own rhyme.

ice skating options in Lauterbach

The carnivalists from Lauterbach invite the Fuldaers to go to ice in the Lauterbach Eisarena instead. This system has the advantage of offering ice cream even in warm weather. Thanks to an ice cream maker, smooth ice is provided and ice skates can be loaned on site. A reference to the detour by Vogelsberg from March and a convenient train connection from Foll to Lauterbach, which can be reached in just 26 minutes, make the ice arena more attractive. The Lauterbacher Eisarena is open until April.

parallel to the ice rink on the Aueweiher, the city of Fulda also plans to build a beach volleyball field in order to increase the quality of stay on the bank of the Aueweiher. There are also considerations for a gastronomic offer nearby. The State Garden Show 2023 in Fulda recorded over half a million visitors, which underlines the attractiveness of the region.

With this ice rink project, the city has the hope of offering the citizens a place for leisure activities in winter, especially since the next ice rink is 25 kilometers away in Lauterbach. While the planning and construction of the ice rink are progressing, it remains to be seen whether the weather conditions will enable the construction of an attractive ice surface. How the weather forecasts will be canceled in the coming weeks could be crucial for the success of the project.

A comprehensive discussion about ice skating shows that this pleasure is suitable for all age groups, even if it is often not cold enough in winter to guarantee a safe ice surface. In Germany, numerous artificial ice rinks and ice halls offer the opportunity to enjoy the ice skating pleasure all year round. Information about the various ice rinks in Germany is available for interested parties.

The hopes for a successful execution of the natural ice rink and the additional planned leisure activities on the Aueweiher are on the agenda of the city of Fulda, while the neighbors in Lauterbach already have attractive alternatives.
