Gießen welcomes 410 international students: a new home for everyone!

On April 19, 2025, the Justus Liebig University (JLU) welcomed 410 international students from 72 countries to the summer semester. In her speech, Prof. Katharina Lorenz, President of the JLU, emphasized the importance of intercultural experiences and described Gießen as a special place for studying. The city, known for its high study density, offers a lively atmosphere that attracts many international students. Over 50 students took part in the opening event in the auditorium of the restaurant internationally and estimated the opportunity to network.

In her speech, Lorenz emphasized the challenges and opportunities that studying abroad emphasized. Anna Pehlgrimm from the academic office presented various contact points and offers that are available to international students. Institutions such as the General Student Committee (AStA), the Studierendenwerk and the Center for Foreign Language and Professional field -oriented skills (ZFBK) contribute to enriching student life in Gießen. These facilities offer comprehensive information and support to enable students to start their studies smoothly.

cultural encounters and leisure activities

The event also presented the Catholic University Community of Gießen (KHG) and Erasmus Student Network Gießen (ESN). These organizations are important contact points for students to establish social contacts and gain cultural experiences. Dr. Madlen Hunger presented the restaurant internationally as a central meeting place. Here students have the opportunity to interact with each other at various events such as karaoke, dance and table tennis.

The feedback from students on their previous experiences in Gießen were consistently positive. Many reported on their motivation to learn the German language and emphasized the balanced mix of lively student life and small -city flair. The facilities present also informed the new students about practical aspects such as chip cards for public transport and the use of city buses.

international students

Another important topic for international students is the acquisition of the International Student ID (ISIC). This worldwide recognized ID provides numerous discounts on trips and leisure activities in over 130 countries. The ISIC ID card is used virtually via the Advice & Social Affairs Department. Students need a current study certificate, proof of identity and a fee of 18 euros. After the application you can use the ISIC app or apply for the plastic card via the ISIC website.

In addition, international students in Germany are obliged to prove health insurance. This includes both legal and private insurance options. Certain groups, such as language course visitors and over 30-year-olds, have to fall back on private insurance. The cooperation with Vela Insurance Service offers tailor -made tariffs here.

Overall, Gießen was presented during the welcome event as a place where international students can grow not only academically but also personally. The city should become a second home for the new students - a goal that is supported by the offered offers and the open, hospitable atmosphere in Gießen.
