The parking garage on the site of the district administration in Darmstadt-Kranichstein is currently being renovated and increased. District Administrator Klaus Peter Schellhaas (SPD) presented the district council the budget for the 2025/26 double budget. He described the financial situation of the district as a "dystopian scenario". The earnings budget for 2025 has a wrong requirement of around 65.7 million euros, while a deficit of 73.4 million euros is forecast for 2026.

The planned loans for the coming years are also alarming: 14.6 million euros are available for 2025 and 24.2 million euros on the agenda for 2026. This raises the question of how the self -administration of the district can be secured, in particular in view of the fact that the circular levy should not be increased in order not to put a strain on the financial situation of the municipalities.

Another aspect that affects the financial situation of the district is the increasing costs for the district as a school authority. These will increase from 107 million euros in 2023 to almost 127 million euros in 2025 and over 134 million euros in 2026. This represents a significant burden on the household.

The administration also plans to give up rent locations on Minna-Rees-Straße and Rheinstraße and to move to Kranichstein. At the same time, the job plan provides for an increase of 40 positions, which entails additional financial obligations.

In order to cover the wrong -demands, funds from reserves and unbound liquidity are to be used. The final approval of the budget statute for 2024 by the supervisory authority took place on June 4, 2024.

In view of these challenges, Schellhaas announced that it announced a household security concept to the Darmstadt regional council, since the budget draft in its current form cannot be approved. The upcoming meetings of the district council will be decisive for how the circle will deal with the financial difficulties.
