This special day is reminiscent of the founding of the German Hiking Association in 1883 and aims to honor the diversity of hiking as well as voluntary commitment in path maintenance, in nature conservation and in the community. According to echo-online.de the day is supported by Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann as patron.

More information about the events has been available on the DWV website since mid -March.

sustainability and nature conservation

hiking plays a crucial role for sustainable tourism in Germany. Marked hiking trails contribute to the tourist infrastructure, promote nature conservation and support the local economy. The German hiking association is carrying out a project to investigate the effects of climate change on hiking trails in order to better protect them against the challenges of the future. The visibility of the effects of climate change already shows bald areas in the forest, damage caused by storm damage and bark beetle infestation as well as damaged bridges.

According to estimates, between 40 and 60 million people hike in Germany. Hiking has a comparatively low ecological footprint and is considered a motor for sustainable tourism. Nevertheless, there is still a need for improvement to make the offers of more resilient and future-proof, as Wanderverband.de emphasized.
