Amphibia under pressure: Excursion of the NABU reveals dangers and protection!
On March 15, 2025, Darmstadtnews.de about an upcoming excursion of the NABU Darmstadt that will offer amphibians. The event aims to strengthen awareness of practical nature conservation work and the variety of amphibian types. On Sunday, March 16, 2025, from 10 a.m. to around 12 p.m., interested participants will meet at the Oberwaldhaus bus stop at Steinbrücker Teich in Darmstadt.
During the excursion, the amphibian facility on Steinbrücker Teich is explained, and there will be a discussion about the way of life of the amphibians and their diversity. The experienced NABU activists who work for nature conservation for many years will share their findings and observations. A central topic will be the effects of climate change and human influences on the habitats of amphibians.
nature conservation and the variety of amphibians
The NABU not only wants to clarify the beauty of the amphibians, but also the challenges in front of which these species are facing. Questions about protection concepts and the question of which amphibian types are winners or losers in a changing climate are also treated. The native species include pond newts, fire salamander and earth killers that traditionally pull into their spawning waters in spring. Have bound wetland. However, these habitats are very endangered by various factors, including the destruction by infrastructure projects.
A common problem is streets that often act as fatal barriers for wandering amphibians. In regions such as Baden-Württemberg and on the Lower Rhine, amphibian activities can already be observed, while in other places the animals are still waiting for their spawning waters. Protective measures such as tunnels or fences are therefore urgently necessary to protect the endangered species.
protective measures and challenges
Protection projects, such as the Amphibium Protection Project Life Bovar, use innovative solutions by, for example, concreting concrete chess rings that are normally used in sewer construction. At the same time, fatal mushrooms such as Batrachochytrium Salamandrorans were detected in the Eifel, the threats the already endangered amphibian populations in those affected.
In summer, many toads and frogs leave the ponds, which often feels like a real rain of wandering animals. The NABU Niedersachsen is also actively involved in developing protective measures for the obstetrician toad, and the ecological NABU station of all/Oker (ÖNSA) has started a call to report change toad observations.
The importance of such excursions must not be underestimated. They offer a valuable opportunity for the public to actively deal with the topic of nature conservation and to expand knowledge about our domestic amphibian species. The event of Nabu Darmstadt is not only free of charge, but donations are also gladly received. This strengthens the commitment to protect the amphibians and protected their habitats.
