Earth Hour 2025: Hessen is the light for environmental protection!
On March 22, 2025, the annual Earth Hour takes place, a global event that wants to draw attention to climate protection. The campaign runs from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and aims to set a sign of the environment by switching off lights. Originally launched in the Pacific island state of Samoa, the event ends on the Cook Islands and in French Polynesia. Worldwide and especially in Germany and Hesse, numerous institutions and private individuals participate in this important symbol action, which has been organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) since 2007.
In the dark, many striking places shine in the dark. The Hercules statue in Kassel and several churches in the city are just a few of the facilities that will appear without light in this hour. The Mathildenhöhe in Darmstadt and important historical buildings such as the Paulskirche and the Romans in Frankfurt will also dim at 8:30 p.m. Furthermore, the cathedral lighting in Wetzlar and Fulda as well as smaller places such as Michelstadt and Königstein in Taunus switch off their lights.
Appeals for participation
international participation
The Earth Hour captivates millions of people, and last year 180 countries took part. Seen globally, the action is supported by numerous iconic landmarks. In New Zealand, for example, the Sky Tower in Auckland and the parliament building in Wellington could be admired in the dark. The opera house and Harbor Bridge also switched off the lights in Sydney. In Europe, important monuments such as Big Ben in London and the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin are on the list of participants, while the Peterskuppel in the Vatican also remains.
Kirsten Schuijt, General Director of the WWF International, emphasizes the importance of Earth Hour and explains: "It's not just about switching off lights; it's about starting a global movement for change." With this campaign, the WWF would like to point out the pressing challenges of climate change, especially with regard to dangerous tilt points and the increasing extreme weather events that have become increasingly common in recent years.
