The regulatory office originally expected 8,000 participants. The protest was under the motto "Never again is now" and was organized by a loose alliance of Gießen's initiatives and groups. The demo started at 2:30 p.m. on the town hall forecourt on Berliner Platz and ended in front of the town hall after the demonstration train had covered a long line through the city center.

The event for the demonstration was the ongoing right -wing populism in Germany, a topic that causes concern in the entire society. In the run -up to the demonstration, a vigil with around 3,000 participants took place, which drew attention to the controversial Bundestag votes on migration policy. The organizers called for broad participation from civil society, including associations, democratic parties, the art and gastro scene as well as religious communities.

The protests in Gießen were part of a larger day of action on which there was demonstrated in several Hessian cities and nationwide. In Darmstadt, around 8,000 people took part in another event that was also directed against right -wing extremism. Here was the motto "Solidarity instead of right pressure - take action together for a strong democracy".

social response and police operations

The Berlin police presented a group of alleged right -wing extremists at the train station during the Gießen event and distributed a total of twelve references. In addition, a drone that was banned from the Kirchenplatz was also ensured. These incidents show how explosive and challenging the situation around the demonstrations.

Nationwide, the police estimated the number of demonstrators at around 250,000, while the organizers spoke of 320,000 people. In Bremen there were 35,000, 24,000 in Hanover and around 3,000 participants in Rostock. These numbers reflect the growing concern about right -wing extremist tendencies in Germany.

The organization terre des Hommes also asked to actively oppose the right. It emphasizes the importance of human rights, tolerance and equality, which is currently increasingly under pressure in Germany. The appeal is aimed at all defenders of democracy to get involved and to receive a clear position against right -wing extremism.

The Gießen demonstration and the subsequent protests in other cities are part of a broader movement that works for a fair and inclusive society.
