Fast fashion fight: Hessen relies on conscious textile consumption!
On April 25, 2025, the BUND Hessen will take stock of the worrying effects of the fast fashion on our environment. The environmental association calls for a rethink in the consumption of textiles and indicates the enormous resources of resources that are associated with the production and the quick exchange of cheap clothing. In addition to the high resource consumption, garbage, pollution from harmful chemicals and climate -damaging emissions are also essential problems caused by almost fashion. This leads to an ever more pressing discussion about sustainable consumption habits.
Fast fashion describes the rapid production and the frequent exchange of cheap clothing. This practice not only has negative influences on the environment, but also on the social conditions in the manufacturing regions. The federal government points out that recycling solutions for textile waste are rare and that environmental damage is enormous. As part of the current fashion revolution action week, which takes place from April 22nd to 27th, it is specifically advertised for more transparency and responsibility in the fashion industry. Actions take place in numerous Hessian cities such as Darmstadt, Kassel, Frankfurt and Offenbach, in memory of the tragedy of the 2013 Rana Plaza collapse, in which over 1,100 people were killed.
conscious consumption and local initiatives
The federal government recommends that fashion be more conscious: buy less frequently, prefer second-hand clothing, repair or rely on natural fashion. Numerous initiatives are active in Hesse that promote awareness of sustainable fashion. These include clothing exchange parties, DIY workshops and repair cafés that bring people together and spread the idea of a sustainable lifestyle. According to the federal government, interest in sustainable fashion has increased in recent years and acceptance for second-hand products has grown, especially in urban areas.
The advantages of second-hand trade are evident: According to a current survey, half of the consuming experience with the purchase of used clothing, and six out of ten buyers intend to acquire further second-hand items in the future. Flea markets and free shops also offer alternative options for purchasing clothing and thus counteracting the fast fashion. These trends will be further strengthened by the Kassel Greenpeace Jugend, which organized the first clothing exchange party in the region in 2015.
increasing textile consumption Undeu environmental agency
The EU environmental agency has published alarming numbers that document the increasing textile consumption in the EU. In 2022, the average textile consumption per EU citizen was 19 kilograms, which is made up of 8 kg of clothing, 4 kg shoes and 7 kg household textiles. For comparison: in 2019 this value was still 17 kg. Jörg Nitsch, the state chairman of the BUND Hessen, urgently warns of the serious consequences that Fast fashion brings with it, including drastic resource consumption and the associated environmental pollution.
The fashion revolution action week is therefore not only an appeal to consumers, more consciously to choose sustainable alternatives, but also a platform to demand responsibility and transparency within the fashion industry. Events such as film evenings, city tours and workshops in cities such as Darmstadt should offer different approaches to sustainability and discuss the topic of far -reaching in society.
