Torsten Lieberknecht: a heart club and the dream of the Bundesliga!

Torsten Lieberknecht, a former player and coach, opened openly about his deep connection with 1. FC Kaiserslautern (FCK) in an interview. The 51-year-old, born in Bad Dürkheim, looks back on a moving career that has its origin at FCK. He gave his Bundesliga debut in the FCK jersey in 1992 and was trained in the youth of the association.

After his active career, which he ended in 2007, Lieberknecht took over the coaching office. In this function he led Eintracht Braunschweig and most recently SV Darmstadt 98 back to the Bundesliga. However, he resigned from his post near Darmstadt on September 1, 2024 and has been without a club since then. Among other things, the reasons for his resignation were the desire to help those responsible for the FCK, which led him back to his heart.

Lieberknecht's return fantasies

The 1st FC Kaiserslautern Lieberknecht attests enormous potential to return to the highest German division. He describes the FCK stadium as impressive and sees the current time as a good opportunity for the club to get back on the road to success. "It was always my childhood dream to become a professional at the FCK," said Lieberknecht, who still follows the club with great interest today.

He wishes the people in the club that they can quickly experience Bundesliga football again. In view of the current situation of the association, Lieberknecht's return could possibly be a step in the right direction.

A look at the coaching career

Lieberknecht's coaching career is remarkable. After Benno Möhlmann's resignation in May 2008, he became head coach of Eintracht Braunschweig. Under his leadership, the team was not only promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga, but also the return to the Bundesliga after 28 years. From 2018 to 2020 he was a coach of MSV Duisburg before moving 98 in June 2021. Despite his success, he left the club in 2024.

The rumors about a possible change of coach at the FCK received new impetus when the former coach Dirk Schuster surprisingly changed abroad. This could open the door for Lieberknecht, which would be a familiar face in the club.

The future of the 1st FC Kaiserslautern remains uncertain, but with an active interest of former players like Lieberknecht, a hopeful perspective could be.
