Tragic tram accident in Griesheim: pedestrian dies!
On Saturday morning, a tragic accident with a tram occurred in Griesheim, part of the Darmstadt-Dieburg district, in which a 68-year-old pedestrian lost her life. According to Hessenschau wanted to cross an unrestricted level crossing at Fichtestrasse. There was a collision with a tram approaching from Darmstadt.
The injuries she suffered from the incident were so heavy that the pedestrian died immediately at the scene of the accident. The 28-year-old tram driver was badly affected by the incident and suffered a shock. In order to clarify the exact course of the accident, an expert was commissioned to investigate.
The dangers for pedestrians in road traffic
Accidents between pedestrians and trams represent a relevant topic. As explained in Verkehrslexikon , pedestrians are taken into account in traffic accidents. Tram drivers are obliged to observe the corresponding regulations of the Road Traffic Regulations (StVO). An important point is that rail vehicles have priority in front of pedestrians at pedestrian crossings.
It becomes clear that tram drivers act in behavior if they partially block the pedestrian crossings. Flashing light systems that react to train contact are essential to warn pedestrians in good time. There may be a breach of duty if such warnings are missing. At the same time, inattentive pedestrians can carry part of the responsibility for accidents, especially if they cross the tracks.
How can the safety of pedestrians be improved?
In order to increase the safety of pedestrians, the President of the German Road Safety Council (DVR), Manfred Wirsch, calls for stronger focus on foot traffic in transport policy. The Federal Government is working on a new foot traffic strategy, which, among other things, provides for simplification of the assignment of areas for foot and bicycle traffic. In addition, municipalities should be able to order zebra crossings in the future without proof of a special risk.
A comprehensive discussion about traffic safety and the protection of pedestrians is essential, especially according to such tragic incidents. The optimization of the road traffic regulations could make a decisive contribution to the fact that accidents as in Griesheim do not repeat themselves in the future.
