Railway expansion in full swing: Gelnhausen-Hanau ready for quick connections!
The rail infrastructure in the Kinzigtal is currently experiencing significant changes. The expansion of the railway line between Hanau and Gelnhausen gained speed last week and will continue until Friday, May 2. Construction teams and machines are also in Schlüchter station. Especially after the Easter days, Deutsche Bahn draws a positive intermediate record of the progress of the construction work. Work on an elevator and on a stairway is continued in particular on the middle platform in Schluechtern.
The track renewal in the Flieden -Schluechter section, better known as “Ziegenberg”, is progressing. In addition, there are selective construction grunder explorations and the demolition of the Westpang Bridge in Gelnhausen was successfully completed. With this step, 130 hours were invested to remove 1,500 tons of material. An auxiliary bridge for road traffic remains in operation as long as the train work continues.
construction progress and upcoming challenges
The construction work also includes the installation of new tracks, soft and overhead line masts. A special machine is used to solidify the ground in the Hailer Aue. Five new course must be installed in Niedermittlau and a new passage is under construction. The track construction on the north side also takes shape. In parallel to this work, the construction teams modernize Fulda station to ensure barrier -free use.
In this context, the project is carried out as part of the Germany cycle and the infrastructure development program "Frankfurt/Rhein-Main Plus". After the final completion, it is planned to separate passenger and freight traffic in order to enable a more reliable operating speed and an improved driving service.future developments
From January 2024, the main work begins for the four -track expansion of the route between Gelnhausen and Hanau. This will include the dismantling of tracks in the north and south of the Gelnhausen train station. The laying of bus stops and parking spaces is also necessary to create space for civil engineering and construction pits. Earth construction work around the “Landstrasse L3202” road bridge should begin from autumn 2024.
The ambitious goal of this project is to create sufficient route capacities to dissolve existing capacity bottlenecks. The speed on the route is to be increased from 160 km/h to 230 km/h, which will result in a significant improvement in punctuality in distant and regional traffic. Preparations have been made in the area of the Gelnhausen station since summer 2023. New overhead lines and weather protection houses have already been put into operation.
In addition, the new passenger underpass at Hailer-Meerholz station was completed, which can be used after completion of the outdoor platform. During the construction work, Deutsche Bahn will take measures to keep the disorders due to the construction work as low as possible. Nevertheless, the train asks for understanding of any impairments. For travelers between Hanau and Gelnhausen, rail replacement vehicles are available to ensure seamless locomotion.
Overall, it can be seen that the ongoing and planned work represent an essential part of infrastructure development in the region, supported by the BUND, Land Hessen, the city of Frankfurt am Main as well as the Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund and DB AG. Deutsche Bahn emphasizes the importance of these measures for the future performance of the rail network.
