Fulda train station: Symbolic groundbreaking for barrier -free future!
The construction work on the barrier -free modernization of the Fulda train station has recently started. The symbolic groundbreaking for the extensive project took place a few days ago. Together with the federal government, Deutsche Bahn (DB) is investing around 35 million euros in the renewal and improvement of the infrastructure. This project is part of a larger initiative in which the DB plans to invest 5.5 billion euros in the modernization of its train stations over the next five years, such as fru.de
The modernization of the Fulda train station is divided into two construction phases. The first construction phase should be completed by November 2023. The platform 1 is extended to 355 meters and raised to a height of 76 cm above the rail top. Additional platforms, 36/37 and 38/39, are increased to a height of 55 cm. These measures aim to improve accessibility for passengers restricted mobility. Existing access routes are also adapted to make access easier.
comprehensive improvements
The planned changes also include the installation of a new lighting system and a tactile path guide system on the platforms. These adjustments benefit blind and visually impaired travelers. In addition, the roof of the Post Tunnel on platform 1 is being renovated, and new weather protection houses are being built on platforms 36/37 and 38/39.
The second construction phase is expected to begin in early 2027 and is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2028. The planned measures include the installation of elevators and tactile path control systems on the middle platform climbing 3/4, 6/7 and 8/9. Ramps, the platform roofs and the platform covering are renewed. This comprehensive modernization process contributes to further increasing the quality of stay and comfort for around 26,000 newcomers at the Fulda train station every day.
investments in the future
The DB pursues a clear goal with these measures: improving accessibility and travel home fort, especially for students, commuters and tourists. As part of the “Future Bahn” program, the redesign of several main train stations in large cities such as Dortmund, Frankfurt am Main and Munich are currently being planned. The urgently needed measures include new escalators, elevators, scoreboards, as well as an improved path control system.
Overall, the DB operates around 5,400 train stations, of which over three quarters are accessible without steps. The continuous investments in the station modernization aim to increase the quality and thereby gain more customers. According to Bahnblogstelle.com , a central background of these efforts is the increasing debt of the railway, which is expected to increase from 17.6 billion euros in the previous year to almost 19 billion euros.
