Construction site brings S-Bahn traffic to standstill between Frankfurt and Offenbach!

From April 28, 2025, commuters between Frankfurt and Offenbach are faced with considerable restrictions in S-Bahn traffic. This is reported by the Hessenschau . Due to construction work in the S-Bahn tunnel between Frankfurt-Mühlberg and Offenbach-Ost, passengers must expect impairments from the date mentioned, which will last until October 2025.

The construction work affects tracks, soft, tunnel lighting and fire protection. A total investment of around 180 million euros will be raised for this. During the school holidays, the route is completely blocked, which is a significant challenge for commuters who rely on rail transport.

construction phases and blocking times

The construction work is divided into several phases:

  • phase 1 (April 28th - May 6th): Restrictions between Offenbach Ost and Hanau Central Station. At night from April 28th to 30th and on May 5th and 6th, the route will be closed from 00:20 to 4:20 a.m.
  • phase 2 (May 7th - July 3): From this phase, there will also be restrictions during the nights from Monday to Friday between 9:20 p.m. and 00:20.
  • phase 3 (July 4th - August 18): The Offenbach Ost to Mühlberg route is completely blocked here.
  • phase 4 (August 18 to October 1): There are nightly restrictions on all days of the week.
  • phase 5 (October 2 to October 20): complete closures can be expected.

The night work and the statutory holidays represent additional challenges at the start of the construction work. From May 9, one-track block will be closed, followed by a complete blocking from July 4, 2025. This also affects the S-Bahn connections S1, S2, S8 and S9, as on the website of the RMV
