Bridge tear in Hanau: Ebb for rail traffic until the end of February!

On February 14, 2025, the last remaining section of the Hanau Central Station Bridge begins. The southern part of the train station will be completely closed from February 14 at 10 p.m. to February 28th at 4:00 a.m. This measure has been carried out as part of the largest infrastructure project in Hanau for decades. The bridge, which was originally built in 1958, was in need of renovation over the years, so that a demolition was inevitable. The old building was 120 meters long and weighed 4,500 tons.

Already in January the first section of the bridge was demolished, the work of which was completed faster than planned. The upcoming demolition of the 62 -meter -long southern section is carried out by cutting them into 14 parts. The total weighting of these segments is around 2,400 tons. A caterpillar crane will then put the parts in an adjacent allotment garden. These measures have a significant impact on rail traffic in Hanau and its surroundings.

traffic restrictions and alternative travel routes

Deutsche Bahn has already announced that restrictions and failures can be expected in regional and national rail traffic. Travelers are therefore recommended to inform themselves about the current connections before starting travel. It is not possible to take bicycles with you in the replacement buses. From February 14 from 8:00 p.m., failures and partial failures on lines RE 50 and RB 51 between Fulda and Frankfurt are already to be expected, with replacement traffic that is set up between Fulda and Hanau.

Another important point in time is February 15, at which further failures occur between 8:00 p.m. and February 16 at 5:00 a.m. Train traffic will also be restricted from February 21st to 24th, and on February 25th from 7.30 p.m. there will be limited train traffic between Frankfurt and Fulda/Bebra.

project financing and schedule

The total costs for the demolition and new construction of the bridge amount to 56 million euros, with half the financing being borne by Deutsche Bahn and the city of Hanau. In addition, the project receives a grant of 18 million euros from the state of Hesse. The completion of the new Central Station Bridge is planned for 2027.

The ongoing work is part of a comprehensive initiative in which Deutsche Bahn and the federal government are working on improving the rail network in order to make train traffic more sustainable and at the same time punctual. In this context, the construction of the Hanau Central Station Bridge plays a central role, since it not only improves local but also national transport connections and dissolves the large investment backlog in the area of the rail infrastructure.

Overall, it can be seen that developments around Hanau Central Station are complex and have to be planned thoroughly to ensure future mobility in the region. Travelers should therefore regularly inquire about the current situation and possible alternatives while the work is continued.
