Frankfurtrheinmain: A milestone for sustainable tourism in Hesse!

On January 31, 2025, the destination Frankfurtrheinmain is recognized as a "sustainable travel destination", a step that has the potential to change tourism in the region decisively. This was announced by Tourcert, a renowned certification body at the end of November 2024. This should not only set standards for environmentally conscious tourism, but also to strengthen the regional economic cycles.

District Administrator Jan Weckler von Wetteraukreis emphasizes the growing importance of sustainable tourism. Five companies and institutions from the Wetteraukreis, including the Keltenwelt am Glauberg and Tourism Information Butzbach, were recognized as "partners sustainable travel destination". This partnership aims to offer visitors to the region sustainable opportunities and to promote awareness of responsible trips.

sustainability strategy of the region

The Tourist Destination Frankfurtrheinmain was founded in 2020 and comprises five cities and four counties, including Frankfurt am Main, Darmstadt, Offenbach and the Wetteraukreis. The target markets are primarily Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia, Baden-Württemberg and Austria, Switzerland and the Netherlands. The certification process, which began in early 2023, included a comprehensive assessment of the existing offers and an analysis of sustainable practices.

A key feature of this process was the development of a improvement program. This program defines clear goals in the areas of sustainable offer design, strengthening regional economic cycles and optimized visitor steering. Thomas Feda, Managing Director of Tourismus+Congress GmbH Frankfurt am Main, emphasizes the need to continuously implement improvements in these areas.

partnerships for a sustainable future

Participation in the initiative is free of charge for companies and has already been accepted by 25 partner companies. These include a variety of offers, such as museums, restaurants, and even a bike taxi provider. The sustainability performance of these partners was examined by independent experts and documented in a detailed report. This ensures the credibility of the certification process.

The Hessian Ministry of Environment, Climate Protection, Agriculture and Consumer Protection (HMUKLV) has played an important role here. Tourcert was commissioned to implement the certification process, supported by Tourismus Management Hessen UG (TMH), which acts as a strategic networker.

The way to continuous improvement

The certification is not to be understood as a one -off process. Rather, it is part of an ongoing commitment that requires constant efforts to adhere to and increase the standards for sustainable tourism. The review and adaptation of the criteria play a central role in ensuring that all partners act in harmony with international sustainability standards.

The importance of sustainable tourism offers is constantly growing. More and more travelers value environmentally friendly and socially responsible practices, which puts companies under pressure to work transparently and offer sustainable solutions. These developments show that sustainable tourism not only benefits the environment, but also economically strengthens the Weatherau region and protects cultural identities.

The destination Frankfurtrheinmain is not only an important address for travelers with its award as a "sustainable travel destination" who value sustainability, but also a model for other regions that want to take similar steps.
