Mettmann receives a plane! Lufthansa baptizes new Airbus on city names
On April 10, 2025, Lufthansa City Airlines reached an important milestone: its Airbus A320neo now officially bears the name "Mettmann". This aircraft with the identification D-Aijm was put into service on October 3, 2023 and shines with technical specifications that make it a modern plane of European aviation.
The Airbus has a length of 37.57 meters, a span of 34.10 meters and a height of 12 meters. With a total weight of 73.5 tons, the machine can transport up to 180 passengers. Before the official naming, the plane has already flown impressive 67 different destinations in Europe and carried out more than 2,600 flights that promoted almost 347,000 passengers.
a proud ambassador for Mettmann
The name "Mettmann" was visibly attached to the machine in March 2025. Mayor Sandra Pietschmann expressed her joy about the new aircraft as an ambassador for the city. The first "Mettmann" machine was a Canadair Regionaljet CRJ900, which was in use from 2006 to 2021. Usually the name is transferred to a new aircraft when the originally baptized machine leaves out of the fleet.
Fleet planning at Lufthansa is in constant change. The Munich Airport, the location of the naming, will continue to act as a home base for the "Mettmann". At this point it should be noted that the first Lufthansa aircraft name, which was named after a German city, was the "Berlin" aircraft (a Boeing 707) in 1960
new perspectives for Lufthansa City Airlines
The Lufthansa City Airlines received its first Airbus A320neo with the registration D-Aiji, which was handed over to the airline in March 2023. With this new plane you complement your existing fleet of three older A319. The first flights of the new A320neo are to begin on June 26, with the first route between Munich and Birmingham, England, is planned.
The company aims to establish an accessible airline that supports the main hubs in Frankfurt and Munich. Here, a strategy is being followed that are aimed at the competition with ultra-low-cost airlines such as Ryanair and Easyjet. From 2026, Airbus A220-300, which were ordered last year, are also to be introduced with a view to a fleet of 40 aircraft that consume less fuel and offer more amenities.
A new employee staff was also hired and the company has hired employees who are willing to accept lower salaries than the average in the industry. These steps are part of the efforts to design the airline more efficiently and attractive for passengers.
In total, the development around the "Mettmann" and the new fleet of Lufthansa City Airlines illustrates the ambitions of the airline to gain a foothold in the European market and offer innovative solutions for travelers.
