New shine for Trier: Theater receives modern entrance and complete renovation!
The theater in Trier faces a comprehensive renovation that focuses on the contemporary design and accessibility. On April 18, 2025, Trier's head of culture Markus Nöhl announced that the existing entrance foyer, which has been housing cash register and cloakroom for over 60 years, has been torn down. The new entrance will move from south to east and open to the city to improve accessibility for all citizens. Passers-by who come from the cattle market will find the new access on Gerty-Spiess-Straße, just a few meters behind the parking garage exit.
"The place should always be open and accessible to everyone," emphasized Nöhl. With this measure, a glass cultivation is also built, which includes gastronomy and open areas. These are supposed to offer pedestrians breaks and residence opportunities, while a current wall hides the view of the theater. Even those who do not want to visit the theater should also have the opportunity to cross the building, which is excluded at night when the cultural institution is closed.
architectural expertise for the renovation
The renovation of the theater is led by the architecture firm MOW and Fabre Speller. These two offices were selected from 14 applications and have extensive experience with renovations in cities such as Paris and Frankfurt. They act as general planners and coordinate the various trades that are necessary for the renovation. A special focus is on the structural defects that have been determined in the existing structure. These include holes in walls, damp areas, mold and outdated sanitary facilities, all of which require urgent renewal.
The collaboration with the Hamburg architecture firm PFP for the new construction of the entrance area and the orchestral trial hall will also play a central role. The draft of PFP provides large glass fronts that offer insights into the orchestral activities and thus optimize the connection between theater and public space.
costs and schedule of the renovation
The costs for the renovation were now estimated at 81.7 million euros, a significant increase compared to the original 51 million euros. The city of Trier expects 60 % of the country to promote the financial burden on the city's budget to 5 to 6 million euros over five years. The design planning and the cost calculation should be completed by mid -November 2023, and a funding application will also be made up to this point. The city hopes for the approval of the funds by mid -2026, whereby the start of construction is planned for the end of 2026. The renovation work itself is expected to take at least three years, so that completion is not to be expected before 2030.
The comprehensive plans for the renovation of the theater reflect Trier's commitment to make cultural institutions up to date and to facilitate access for all citizens. While the buildings suffer from today's requirements, the city relies on a future -oriented approach to meet the relevance of the cultural scene.
