Storm risk in the Rhine-Main area: DWD warns of violent winds!

On April 13, 2025, the German Weather Service (DWD) for parts of the Rhein-Main area lifted the warnings of strong wind. These warnings, which originally applied until early Sunday evening, concerned the city of Frankfurt as well as the districts and cities of Offenbach and Groß-Gerau. The all -clear is now being given in these areas, while there are still warnings for other regions.

The warnings for the Main-Kinzig district, the Hochtaunuskreis, the Main-Taunus district and the Wetteraukreis apply. These areas are still affected by potential dangers that are displayed by wind gusts in various warning levels. The warnings of the DWD outline the dangers of wind gusts that are divided into four categories: from simple gusts of wind to gusts of wind to extreme hurricane gusts.

Detailed wind warnings

The warning levels of the DWD are as follows:

  • warning level 1: wind gusts over 50 km/h
  • warning level 2: storm gusts between 65 and 89 km/h
  • warning level 3: hurricane -like gusts from 105 to 119 km/h and hurricane gusts over 120 km/h
  • warning level 4: Extreme hurricane gusts from 140 km/h

special caution is required, since the warnings give information about possible damage such as uprooted trees, damaged roofs and falling branches. These warnings came into force on Sunday morning at 9 a.m. and apply until 6 p.m. on the same day.

In addition to the wind warnings, the DWD also warned of strong thunderstorms that affect Hesse in particular, with a focus in South Hesse. In particular, gusts of wind, heavy rain and hail can be expected here. These weather warnings show the increased danger level from which the affected regions can suffer and illustrate the need for precautionary measures.

weather trend and future developments

The DWD predicts a turbulent weather phenomenon, which is caused by the meeting of warm air masses and cold polar winds. Hurricane "Éowyn" brings mild temperatures and stormy winds, which can reach wind speeds between 55 and 65 km/h with peak values up to 80 km/h on Friday afternoon. This situation leads to an increased probability of fallen trees and other storm damage.

The warnings apply until Friday evening, whereby the local weather conditions could increase through rain. The DWD weather experts recommend that you exercise caution and pay attention to the local weather reports, especially in the heavily affected regions.
