Ice skating dreams on the Aueweiher: frost or mud? Fulda is looking for the solution!
am Aueweiher in Fulda, a new project is being implemented to promote the winter leisure activities. The city has created a hollow that is filled with water to enable ice skating at frosty temperatures. However, the temperatures are currently too high, so that the area is more likely to be a mushy puddle. Despite the cooler days in the past few weeks, no ice skaters have so far gathered, which raises questions about the attractiveness of the ice rink.
City building councilor Daniel Schreiner emphasizes that the area was prepared as part of the reuse of the State Garden Show (LGS). In a rhyme, he underlines the challenges of climate change and the hope of frost to put the ice rink into operation. Critical voices, such as those of Hans-Joachim Tritschler from the SPD/volt faction, are skeptical. He refers to earlier failed attempts to establish an ice rink in Fulda, and is of the opinion that spring does not normally begin in February.
The ice rink in Fulda
The open-air ice rink should be used free of charge over an area of more than 1,500 square meters. The city bears the total cost of 80,000 euros. At suitable frosty temperatures, the area is prepared with water to enable ice skating pleasure. The idea of building an ice rink in the castle garden was rejected because this special location could not be implemented. There is no ice rink in Fulda, so the next opportunity for ice skating 25 kilometers away in Lauterbach.
In order to promote the quality of stay on the Aueweiher, the construction of a beach volleyball field is planned in parallel to the ice rink. In addition, the city works on a gastronomic offer directly on the bank of the Aueweiher. The State Garden Show, which recently took place in Fulda, recorded over half a million visitors, which underlines the city's commitment in improving leisure activities.
climate change and urban development
The context of these measures is related to the global challenges through climate change and increasing urbanization. Cities produce two thirds of global CO2 emissions and are therefore facing considerable difficulties with regard to air pollution and environmental destruction. In view of these challenges, investments in environmentally friendly infrastructure are of immense importance. GIZ reports that development projects such as Felicity II are targeting the urban infrastructure and CO2 emissions Reduce, especially in Eastern Europe and Central Asia.
Those responsible in Fulda underline the importance of such projects. Stadtbaurat Schreiner is confident that the project will be accepted when it is anchored in the heads of the citizens and looks at the future opportunities for the city. The citizens hope for early frosty temperatures to be able to use the new ice rink in full splendor.
