Lions Club Fulda: handed over 20,000 euros for cancer research!
On January 18, 2023, an important day trip by the Lions Club Fulda to the University Hospital Würzburg (VHF) took place, in which around 50 members took part. This generous donation was generated by proceeds from the popular Lions run, the sale of the Lions Advent calendar and other donations.
Björn Steinacker, the President of the Lions Club Fulda and at the same time a member of the foundation advisory board of "Research helps", in his speech emphasized the central importance of oncology for medical research. He emphasized how important it is to support projects in this area in order to make progress in cancer treatment. Gabriele Nelkenstock, the chairwoman of the Board of Trustees, was enthusiastic about this high donation, which has provided a total of 904,000 euros in funding for cancer research projects since the foundation was founded in 2017.

Specialists from experts, including Prof. Dr. Maik Luu and private lecturer Dr. Alexander Weich, illuminated current topics in cancer research. Prof. Dr. Luu explained the importance of immunotherapy while Dr. Softly presented new developments in early detection and treatment of colon cancer. The lectures enabled a lively discussion between the speakers and the guests present.
Advent calendar with social responsibility
The Lions Club Fulda is not only known for its fundraising campaigns, but also for the Advent calendar, the 19th edition of which is planned for 2024. The proceeds from this calendar support both the “Rosenbrot” project of the Social Service of Catholic Women e.V. Fulda to combat child poverty and the foundation for promoting cancer research at the University of Würzburg. The calendar is sold in a circulation of 4,800 pieces at a price of 5 euros and offers its buyers the chance of 61 prices with a total value of around 9,000 euros. The prices are drawn from December 1 to 24, 2024 under notarial supervision.
The Lions Club Fulda, which has existed for over 65 years and is part of Lions International with more than 1.4 million members, will publish the winning numbers on various platforms from December 1, 2024, including the homepage of the Lions Club and the Facebook page. The support of sponsors and buyers is essential for the successful implementation of these projects, says the club.
