Mourning in the Wirgarten: Oskar, the popular Wallaby star, died!

In the Wirgarten Fulda, the sad news of the late Wallabys Luisa and Oskar met the visitors and the team. Luisa died in July 2024, while Oskar only died on Monday of this week. Oskar, who was around 15 years old, which corresponds to the normal life expectancy for Wallabies, suffered from old age and was very popular with both visitors and in the Wirgarten team. These events throw a shadow on the reopening of the Wirgarten on February 1, 2025, which took place after a winter break

.

The new season of the Wirgartens started under special signs. For reasons of animal health, some areas remain closed for the time being to minimize the risk of mouth and claw disease. Nevertheless, there were gratifying news: two German yellow turkeys are to be welcomed as newcomers in the string. Rieke Trittin, the head of the Wirgarten, emphasizes that at least two should be obtained for the new animals to avoid loneliness.

animal protection and future plans

The two Wallabies lived in the strangle for more than a decade. Before that, they were housed in the home animal garden. The Wirgarten team plans to further expand the animal population, whereby kangaroos are considered desirable new additions. The city of Fulda and the children's academy have taken over the patronage over the zoo, which illustrates the importance and support of this project.

The Wirgarten team duly adopted Oskar on Instagram. Together with the loss of animals, the opening of new educational offers could be of interest. From February 2024, special workshops will be offered, which are an ideal opportunity for educational institutions as well as for families and adults to deal with animals.

educational offers and leisure opportunities

The workshops are organized according to grades and topics and can be booked outside the enclosure. Various leisure activities, such as birthday parties, lectures and exhibitions, are aimed at different target groups. These include children, young people, adults and even facilities for seniors. For example, children's birthdays can be celebrated as a “animal -beautiful birthday” in the string of the string, in which up to 10 children can take part. Another special birthday can be organized under the motto "Celebrate with animal best friends", up to 6 children from the age of 6 are welcome.

adults can continue to train with offers such as "animal break" or the course "Das Kleine Wirgarten 1 X 1" and at the same time enjoy the strangle. What is special about these initiatives is the combination of fun and learning where animal husbandry and animal welfare play a central role.

In order to meet the diverse demands on animal husbandry, corresponding qualifications of supervisors are essential. The special animal welfare preservation regulations (in force since July 1, 2018) regulate these points in detail. If you keep animals commercially or economically, you have to prove specific knowledge that can be obtained by the WiFi course.

These developments in the Wirarten Fulda not only show the challenges associated with animal husbandry, but also the commitment of the city and the team to offer an attractive and educational experience for visitors of all ages. While the loss of Luisa and Oskar is mourned, the Wirgarten looks optimistically into the future and is already planning the next steps to expand its offer.
