Wirgarten Fulda mourns for Oskar: kangaroos should come!
The Wirarten Fulda mourns the age of Oskar and Luisa, two popular Wallabies who were part of the zoo for a long time. Luisa died in July 2024, while Oskar died on March 7, 2025. He was about 15 years old and was very popular with visitors and team members. The loss of these two animals leaves a noticeable gap in the string garden, which has been accessible to the public since February 1, 2025, even if some areas remain closed due to mouth and claw disease. The Fuldaer Zeitung reported that the strainer was only opened in 2023 and has been supported by the city and the children's academy, the patron have taken over.
After closing to protect against diseases, the Tiergarten team has already brought new animals to the string: two German yellow turkeys are the latest residents. Rieke Trittin, the head of the Wirgarten, also plans to purchase new animals, with ideally focusing on kangaroos. This represents a revival of animal species that will attract many visitors and breathe new life into the zoo.
educational offers and leisure opportunities
From February 2024, the Wirgarten Fulda will also introduce educational offers for educational institutions. These workshops are tailored to different age groups and topics and can be booked outside the enclosure. The leisure activities include birthday parties as well as lectures and exhibitions that are aimed at a broad target group, including children, adolescents, adults, families, schools, daycare centers and even senior -friendly and therapeutic facilities. Wirgarten Fulda offers special offers for children's birthdays that include various activities and price options.
The offers for children's birthdays are diverse: from the "animal -beautiful birthday", which can be celebrated with up to 10 children, to the program "Celebrate birthday with animal best friends", which is suitable for smaller groups of 6 children. Adults can also benefit from an “animal break”, which is supplemented by various workshops on topics of species -appropriate animal husbandry.
kangaroo in focus
kangaroos, which are known for their impressive jumping power and their bags, could soon enrich the animal garden scene in Fulda. With over 60 species, including the red giant kangaroous, they are among the most iconic animals in Australia. Their adaptability to different habitats is shown in its great variety of way of life, which ranges from solitary animals to social groups. Kangaroos are also fascinating animals for education and research, since they have an efficient digestive system and unique reproductive techniques, such as the embryonic diapause. Wildlifeinfo describes that kangaroos can jump up to three meters away and reach speeds of up to 70 km/h.
With the reserved development of kangaroos through the Wirarten Fulda, not only could diversify the animal offer, but also expand the opportunities for education and nature conservation. Rieke Trittin and her team are faced with the exciting challenge to design this new step for the zoo and its visitors.
