Asian hornets in Hesse: Alarming spread in 2025!
The Asian hornets (Vespa Velutina) is increasingly spreading in Hesse and thus ensures concern among conservationists and among the population. According to Propplante , 280 nests of this invasive way were documented in 2023, which a significant increase in the 150 nests in Represents 2022. This development is particularly striking, since in 2021 only a large part of the sightings from the Bergstrasse district was reported.
The Asian hornets, which originally comes from Southeast Asia and probably came to Europe with imported goods, was first demonstrated in Hesse in 2019. Since then, its influence has spread noticeably, especially in South Hesse, Gießen and Marburg. In the years 2023 and 2024 the hornet was also found in parts of Central Hesse, and the Hessische State Office for Nature Conservation, Environment and Geology (HLNUG) predicts another Spread for 2025.

The Asian hornets differ visually from the European hornet. It has a black basic color with a few yellow tying and easily recognizable, black and yellow legs, while the European hornet is colored yellow-orange. It becomes about 2.4 to 3 centimeters tall and usually does not show aggressive behavior, but can be dangerous when defending your nest.
The spread of Asian hornets has increased significantly in recent years, whereby the geographical expansion from southern Hesse across the district of Bergstrasse to the regions of Taunus and Main-Kinzig. Measures have already been taken in the affected areas to remove nests and control the spread.
With the HLNUG online registration portal, citizens have the opportunity to report sightings. This instrument plays a crucial role to monitor the spread of Asian hornets and, if necessary, successfully intervene.
