Gießen chooses: Bouffier and Volkmann triumph despite the right to vote!

On February 27, 2025, the Bundestag election was a central topic in Gießen and the surrounding area. According to the reports from the Gießener Allgemeine achieved the direct candidates Frederik Bouffier and Johannes Volkmann from the CDU. In the constituency of Gießen, the turnout was 83.06% of the 215,142 eligible voters.

The preliminary end result of the direct candidates in the Gießen constituency showed that Frederik Bouffier with 53,851 votes (30.43%) and Felix Döring from the SPD with 49,203 votes (27.81%) took two of the most important positions. Further results showed that Robin Jünger received 33,549 votes (18.96%) from the AfD and received Michel Zörb from the Greens 15,277 votes (8.63%). Desiree Becker from Die Linke followed with 12,442 votes (7.03%), while Björn Feuerbach received 5.121 (2.89%) and Dennis Pucher from the FDP 4,906 votes (2.77%). In the neighboring Lahn-Dill region, Johannes Volkmann also cut off well and achieved 34.32% of the votes. Dagmar Schmidt from the SPD received 24.06% and Klaus Niggemann from the AfD 23.11%. In Wettenberg, a turnout of 70.8% was determined, while Biebertal horned after 56.7%.

The first projections were particularly exciting to show a clear tendency: the CDU came to 29%, followed by the SPD with 16%and the Greens with 13.5%. The AfD had 19.5% of the votes at the time of the extrapolation. Despite the high turnout, the election campaign in Hesse was shaped by some challenges. The voting right reform meant that five Hessian CDU candidates could not move into the Bundestag.

reactions and outlook

The candidates' reactions were mixed. Robin Jünger from the AfD was satisfied with the doubling of his voices, while Dennis Pucher from the FDP was disappointed with his result. Felix Döring from the SPD perceived his positive result despite the difficult election campaign conditions as a success. Desiree Becker von Die Linke reported on a quadrupled number of members and is also satisfied.

The election campaign had been managed in car dealerships due to carnival events, which made the situation even more difficult. The people in Gießen, who have a population of 94,996 to 72.6 km², looked forward to the future political development in their district. It remains to be seen how the final results of the Bundestag election 2025, which are also shaped by a new voting right reform, will influence the political landscape. The second votes will be decisive for the distribution of seats in the Bundestag, whereby a new system is used without overhang mandates. This could mean that there could be more constituencies in Hesse parties than they are entitled to seats according to the second votes, which in turn could have far -reaching effects on future politics.
