Gießen starts heat transition: Citizens' information available for municipal planning!
Gießen recently unlocked an information platform for municipal heat planning, which provides citizens an interactive card. Users can enter their addresses via this card to get information about connection options to the heating network. This is a crucial step in the implementation of the heat transition, which will be estimated in the next 20 years with costs of around 350 million euros, as
The long -term goal of Gießen is the decarbonization of district heating by 2045. Originally, climate neutrality had already been aimed for by 2035, but this objective was classified as unreachable. The city is one of the first three Hessian municipalities that present a draft for municipal heat planning. According to this plan, the district heating should be at least 75 percent climate -neutral by 2035. The heat planning is based on the overarching goals of Hesse and Germany, which also strive for free greenhouse gas by 2045. In total, larger initiatives for climate protection should also be funded by the federal government as part of a large financial package of 100 billion euros. Citizens should not only receive information, but also advice on the platform. The possibility of submitting statements to the plans ends on April 21. A decision by the city parliament on the heat plan is scheduled for July. Need for individual solutions In urban areas where there are no district heating lines, individual solutions must be developed. This applies in particular to the question of how citizens can be supplied with sustainable heat without connection to the central heat network. Representatives of the GIGG/VOLT parliamentary group also require more offensive information to avoid installing new gas heaters. City representatives emphasize that the conversion process is already underway and that awareness among the population is available for the need for changes. A comprehensive concept for heat planning The Kowap project, which of various partners, including the Adelphi Research Gemeinnützige GmbH and Prof. Dr. Jürgen Knies is carried by the Bremen University of Applied Sciences, deals intensively with municipal heat planning in Germany. It aims at the greenhouse gas -neutral heat supply of the building stock and aims to increase energy efficiency and to advance the decarbonization of heat supply. The integration of renewable energies and waste heat is particularly important. The project that runs by the end of 2025 is financed by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection (BMWK). Among other things, it includes the analysis of obstacles to the law, the development of recommendations for action and the support of smaller communities in heat planning. Proposed events As part of the project, the topic should continue to bring the topic to the public and offer suggestions for municipal heat planning. Among other things, lectures and seminars on various aspects of heat planning are planned. In the discussion about future heat supply, it can already be seen that the challenges are enormous. However, through the cooperation between municipalities, citizens and institutions, Gießen could take an important step towards sustainable heat supply and climate neutrality.
