Storks return: a sign of spring in Hamm and Groß-Gerau!

The first storks celebrated their return from the winter quarters in Hamm in early February 2025, although the weather is still frosty. The first sightings were documented at Heessen Castle and at the cross hedge in Uentrop. Lino Köhler observes his stork couple Lou and Leon via a webcam on Hohefeldweg. This return is a gratifying event for ornithologists and nature lovers, since the stork population in Hamm grows steadily. According to the nature conservation association (NABU), 47 young birds slipped last year.

Storks typically return to their old nest in their summer quarters. Further sightings in the coming days can be expected, which is a hopeful sign for the region.

growing in Groß-Gerau

In addition, 208 young storks were counted, which are now fledged and are often on the Büttelborn sports field, where they are monitoring football training from high -lying floodlight masts. In the spring and summer months, the storks settled in this area. Their number grows steadily.

bachelor troops and ascent to the air

While the young storks hike in social groups, they form bachelor troops that will grow in the coming weeks. The area around the district waste landfill is particularly popular, where up to 70 storks can be counted that use the thermal to fly to 1,000 meters. The number of storks could grow to up to 100 in the next few weeks, which makes the region a contact point for these majestic birds.

Overall, the storks in the region are very adaptable, despite the adverse weather conditions that resulted in negative developments in the rest of Germany. At the end of August, the young birds then start their trip to the winter quarters to the south, while the old birds stay for about two weeks longer to build up reserves for the flight.

The observations in Hamm and Groß-Gerau not only demonstrate the return of the storks, but also the remarkable increase in their population in these regions. This is pursued with great tension, since not only the bird lovers, but also the adjacent nature can enjoy.
