increase in shop theft

According to the Cologne Commercial Research Institute, the shoplifting in Germany again rose by 24 percent compared to the previous year. In 2022 there was already an increase to 344,669 thefts displayed, which corresponds to an increase of 34.3 percent. In 2023, the number was further increased to 426,096, which increasingly puts the dealers under pressure. In particular, the dealers in Bad Hersfeld, Rotenburg and Bebra report on thefts that rise, but not to an alarming extent, so hna.de.

The dealers concerned perceive the bureaucratic effort to display thefts as stressful, which is why domestic bans are often pronounced as the first measure. The theft motifs are diverse and range from tests of courage to emergency situations. This opens a discussion about the background and social circumstances that drive people to such acts.

regional developments and reactions

In 2023, a total of 325 shoplifting steels were registered in the district of Hersfeld-Rotenburg, an increase of 55 cases compared to 2022. Bad Hersfeld in particular suffers from these developments, since the number of 76 to 208 thefts has risen here. Despite these figures, the manager of the City Gallery in Bad Hersfeld, Jörg Markert, sees no significant increase compared to previous years. The police in the region is 91.4 percent, which is at least a ray of hope in the situation.

The dealers and the Hessen trade association rely on preventive training courses to prevent thefts. At Tegut Food dealer, for example, there is no noticeable change in theft, apart from a branch with a higher inventory. The expenditure for prevention measures rose to 1.45 billion euros in 2022, which shows how seriously the situation is assessed, especially in view of the total annual cost of around six billion euros for inventory differences.

The regional and national developments show that thefts are not only an individual problem, but also a phenomenon that has a more common sense of society that has deeper causes. Dealers and police must continue to work together to find effective solutions and to ensure security for everyone.
