Fire brigade practices in an empty youth dormitory - new perspectives for Bad Hersfeld!

The former youth dormitory on Wehneberg in Bad Hersfeld is currently being used by the Bad Hersfeld core city weir for training purposes. The Hessisches orphanage of Kassel 1690 provides the property as long as it is waiting for a buyer or tenant. This regulation was launched after the building has been empty for years. Managing Director Stefan Simchen describes the situation as a "win-win situation" for both sides: The fire brigade receives a large object for realistic exercise, while the foundation at the same time manages the property.

The youth dormitory, which was opened in 1954, is now in need of renovation. Over the years, it served various purposes, including the accommodation of emigrants and refugees. From 2002 to 2020, the district was tenant of the property to provide accommodation for refugees. Since mid -2024, the district has once again rented the smaller of the two buildings for the purpose of refugee accommodation. The fire brigade has already cleaned up the house and freed from debris to be prepared for future exercises.

fire brigade exercises in the former home

The fire brigade plans to carry out both smaller and larger exercises in the spacious, multi -storey building. Focal issues include human rescue and tactics. However, these training will take place without water and fire so as not to damage the building. “Disconebel” is used for realistic conditions. The deputy military leader Dennis Ruppel is positive about this option and emphasizes that the first full day is already considered in mid -May 2025. At the same time, the fire brigade is always looking for other suitable objects for your training.

The foundation emphasizes that the building must be available for visits up to a desired sale and will be handed over "broom clean" at the end. According to the managing director Simchen, he is optimistic that a solution for the use of the property can be found within the year. This statement is also supported by the current state of the city market, in which creative usage concepts for vacancy are becoming increasingly important.

Creative use of empty buildings

The problem of vacancy is particularly self -aligning labor markets a growing social concern. As on uses of useful. Examples from other cities show how innovative approaches-such as pop-up shops or temporary art galleries-can be revived by empty rooms.

The conversion of buildings, as it takes in the case of the former youth dormitory, not only offers an immediate solution for temporary use, but also improves the attractiveness of the district in the long term. The Hessisches Orphan's House Foundation and the fire brigade also have the chance to contribute to urban development and at the same time find a sensible use for the currently unused building. Leading concepts in urban development increasingly include this form of intermediate use.

The foundation is still actively looking for a buyer or tenant to permanently hand over the property into new hands. Despite the challenges of the land use plan, which excludes the construction of hotels or permanent residential complexes, there is hope for a solution that will benefit both the fire brigade and the foundation.
