Newborns in the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district: A look at our little ones
On February 28, 2025, the Hersfelder Zeitung Current numbers for the birth rate in the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district. The newborns of the Bad Hersfeld Clinic are presented in the popular "Baby Chronicle" section. In the first two months of 2025, several babies were born here, including Antonio Stefan on February 11th in Bebra and Johanna Ernst Almonte on the same day in Rotenburg. A total of 14 newborns are listed, whose birth dates are between January 18 and February 12th.

The development of the birth rate in recent years has been less gratifying. As HNA there was a decline in the birth in 2021. A total of 817 births were certified, compared to 892 in the previous year. This trend is particularly striking when you look at the development of recent years. In 2019 there were still 967 births, while in 2016 a record was achieved with 1019 births.The birth rate show seasonal fluctuations. Most births took place in August in 2021, while December was the weakest month with only around 50 births. The decline in births is part of a larger trend that affects not only the local Brockenland, but also all of Germany.

A comprehensive review of birth development shows that Germany has been struggling with a continuous decline since 1990. According to Destatis , the lowest value has been expected for 2024 with around 680,000 births since 2014. The decline is particularly dramatic in East Germany, with a birth rate of 0.78 children per woman in 1994. In western Germany, the birth frequency is comparatively higher, but also on a declining trend.
These developments raise questions about what the future of the population in the district and beyond. It remains to be seen whether the new social and political measures to promote the start of the family will have a positive impact on birth rates.
