Michael Roth, the long-time SPD member of the Bundestag, has announced that it will not be elected again after 27 years. During his farewell interview, Roth reflected on his political career and commented on the latest Bundestag election, in which the SPD suffered a defeat and lost the direct mandate in the Hersfeld-Rotenburg/Werra-Meißner constituency. He was shocked by the election results and believes that he couldn't have changed anything. Roth will live privately and plans to write a biographical book privately in the future. He would like to remain politically active, but without striving for a political office or mandate.

Michael Helmut Roth, born on August 24, 1970 in Heringen, has been a member of the German Bundestag since 1998 and, as Minister of State for Europe, has profiled himself in the cabinets Merkel III and IV from 2013 to 2021. Roth explains that he is now signing his emails with the additions "Europeans, citizens, author, freedom fighter". According to him, his role in the Bundestag has received a lot of recognition, in particular his work as chairman of the Federal Foreign Committee since December 2021. This change in his political career indicates that he may want to focus more on writer's activities in the future.

The SPD currently faces challenges that are reinforced by the war in Ukraine and the need to reorient the political.
