Helicopter use against mosquitoes: Kabs fights for quiet summer nights!

On April 1, 2025, the municipal campaign community started to combat the Schnaken plague (KABS) in Hesse this year. The assignment focused on areas near the Rhine, including Groß-Gerau, Riedstadt, Lampertheim and Biblis. According to hessenschau.de , January was shaped by frost and dryness, which reduced the surfaces for the development of mosquito larvae. Nevertheless, a mosquito plague, similar to the previous year, is still possible because the conditions can change quickly.

The Kabs spokeswoman described the first assignment as small and emphasized that combating is carried out both from the air and on foot. It is particularly important to use BTI, a biological means that specifically kills the larvae of almost all types of mosquito. According to bund-naturschutz.de , BTI is often applied by helicopter, since it can also have an effect at cold temperatures.

The importance of mosquito control

mosquitoes such as Aedes Vexans and Aedes Sticticus play an important role in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Their larvae serve as food for fish, while adult mosquitoes fuck and serve as food source. However, this ecological meaning often remains unnoticed when it comes to the comprehensive control of mosquitoes that are also carried out in nature reserves, often with the focus on human needs.

Despite the biological fighter, the use of BTI also causes concerns. Long -term studies show negative effects on other types of insects, such as non -teating sugar mosquitos, which are an important source of food for many animal species. The use of BTI could be particularly problematic during the reproduction period of many animals, which is clearly addressed by the BUND nature conservation. The association demands that BTI should not be used in nature reserves and FFH areas.

control measures and other operations

CARMS is currently focusing on fighting the mosquito larvae only in break forests. In the coming days, further controls will be planned on foot in order to check the effectiveness of the used by means. The area of attack for mosquito control typically extends over a radius of around 1.5 kilometers around the populated towns.

residents in Bürstadt have the opportunity to actively act against the Asian tiger mosquito. Kabs is currently looking for volunteers who want to participate in combating this invasive nature with conscientiousness and motivation. Training is offered before the start of the activity to prepare the helpers in the best possible way.

While combating the mosquito larvae remains important, alternative measures to combat mosquitoes, such as the promotion of natural predators or avoiding open water areas, could reduce mosquito population sustainably. This would not only be in the interests of people, but also of biodiversity on our waters.
