Traffic release on A49: Kassel breathes up - one -way street ADE!

The renovation of the Kassel South Tangent, which has been in progress since May 2, 2023, is a significant challenge for traffic in the region. From March 7, 2025, however, the A 49 between the Kassel-Mitte and the Kassel-West Cross will again be accessible in both directions, which means an important relief for commuters and residents. This step is followed by a month -long one -way regulation that originally only should have taken until the beginning of 2024.

The Autobahn GmbH of the federal government has set up a roundabout during the construction work and until recently the A 49 was only accessible as a two -lane one -way street against clockwise. The measures are part of an overall project that not only focuses on the renewal of the road surface, but also includes drainage facilities and protective devices in order to achieve the long -distance road for increasing traffic. Average traffic has increased from 65,000 to currently 82,000 vehicles per day in recent years, which underlines the urgency of this renovation.

renovation details and delays

The total duration of the renovation of the Kassel south tangent is almost two years. The end of 2024 was originally planned, but the completion was delayed by three months. The reason for the delays is additional work that was required to install special protective devices. This also has an impact on the residents and the surrounding roads, since the bypass of the blocking via side streets such as the L3215 traffic jams, especially between Baunatal and Kassel-Bad Wilhelmshöhe, where there can be delays of up to 15 minutes.

The replacement new building of the Nürnberger Straße underpass has now been completed. With the restoration of normality on the A 49 from March 17th, the traffic situation for residents in the districts of Oberzehren and Nordshausen is expected to be significantly improved. Mayor Philipp Humburg and his colleague Christian Knauf have already expressed hope for positive developments.

traffic management and the challenges during the construction work

Bernhard Klöpfel from Autobahn GmbH emphasizes the complexity of traffic management during the construction work. In particular, the redirection and the temporary traffic rules, such as the speed limit of 80 km/h on the previous one -way street, required careful planning. This regulation enables continuous construction over a length of around 8 km.

From March 17, 2025, two lanes are available to the east on the A 44 between the Kassel-West and the Kassel-Süd triangle. This signals a gradual return to normal traffic use, while the renovation of the last section of the A 49 to the Ohmtal triangle for the A 5 should also be completed by the end of March 2025.

The continuing construction work represent a hurdle, which, however, should ultimately lead to an improved transport infrastructure for Kassel. These measures are crucial to cope with increasing traffic and increase traffic safety. The completion of the renovation work is therefore of great importance not only for road users, but also for the entire region.

The Autobahn GmbH and the responsible authorities are now faced with the challenge of making the traffic smoothly during the final phase of the renovation in order to minimize traffic jams and delays. The view is clearly focused on the positive effects that will bring the new repairs.

For the residents and commuters in the region, it remains exciting until the final completion is finally completed. The hope of a more positive traffic situation after completing the work remains unbroken.
