Dog rescue in Kassel: Malteser mixed Gigi escapes the water shaft!

On Saturday, January 6, 2025, a remarkable incident occurred in Kassel: a small Maltese mixed mint named Gigi fell into an eight-meter-deep water shaft in the Süsterfeld-Helleböhn district. The incident entered around 12:15 p.m. when Gigi, visiting the family of Julia Voge, observed birds in an aviary and fell into the open shaft. The shaft was open because another tenant checked the water level.

While Gigi was in the trap, Julia Voge was in the city center. Her daughter immediately informed her and alerted the fire brigade. The emergency services initially tried to save Gigi with a ladder from the shaft, but quickly found that the shaft was too narrow for this method. Thereupon a height rescuer was drained down into the shaft with a rope.

rescue measures and outcome

gigi was finally saved from the shaft at around 2 p.m. and wrapped in a towel. The dog was exhausted, but luckily unharmed. Julia Voge attributed this to Gigi's low weight and his maneuverability.

The incident was also reported on January 4 when the fire brigade was alerted to an animal rescue after a dog had fallen into a drainage shaft. In this case, too, the shaft was a challenge with a depth of about eight meters. The attempts to rescue with a fire brigade also failed until height rescuers, who had special equipment and training for such operations, were finally consulted. A height rescuer was abandoned on ropes into the shaft to secure the dog and finally bring him back to its lucky owner.
